The Audi A6 Avant 3.0 V6 TDI. Not my typical Sports Car or Sports Hatchback review, but this car deserves attention. Let me continue..
The engine in this car is filth! I had no idea what these large TDI engines were like - as I've only ever driven them in the Audi Q7, not before experienced its ferocity in a normal car. If anybody is looking for something different to your usual BMW 530D/535D I strongly suggest giving one of these a try. In standard form they drive 'nicely', its a really smooth ride. Remapping this engine however creates something deadly (Godly?) and I had no idea what I was in for. The torque 'shove' from this car is almost frightening! This is a really strong engine once tuned - needing both hands on the wheel constantly. As usual, my first tool of choice is the AMT Cartech MPPS V18 Programming Tool. It is the cheapest tool on the market, support from the manufacturer is always 100%, and any garage looking to start remapping can set up with Nicholas Lawrence //ON CARS from as little as £700 for the tool, most second hand laptops work fine for this. Apologies to the owner, but I had to ring an old friend from Kwik Fit to demonstrate the power in this thing. He reluctantly left work for 2-3 minutes, put on the seatbelt, and said ''WTF'' when we reached the A12 Dual Carriageway. It is lethal.. The Chassis Very, very good for its size. This car reminds me of the Audi S8 4.0 TFSI, because I spent a lot of the drive thinking 'this is as comfortable as a MK5 VW Golf', its a nice place to be! I can drive the car and not feel too much body roll, perched on Toyo Proxes T1R's all round and they've coped well under rigorous demand. The Body Do I like big cars? Personally - NO. I'm not a fan. However, more recently I am beginning to fancy the idea of owning either an Audi A4 or Audi A6 Estate/Avant for my daily commuting. While it may not be the best looking car I have taken for review, it wouldn't look out of place parked on the road or somebody's driveway. The Throttle A feast for kings. With remapping, this car is now very similar to driving one of the high end Super Cars that I get hold of. You really do need to brace yourself before pressing the throttle, and keep both hands on the steering wheel. This thing feels as though it has more torque than a Ferrari - and I'm not saying it to 'belittle' one of the best car manufacturers on Earth, but because it may be true.. A good test would be to get some enthusiasts behind the wheel of a decent Sports Car, then let them drive this. For the money - I can already tell their response. The Exhaust Again, like some other Turbo Diesel reviews, these engines aren't built to make a nice noise. The power delivery more than outweighs whatever 'tractor' tone is emitted from this car (at the disgust of 'human' beings and dogs alike), and a rolling 20-80 (Miles Per Hour) test would stop any disapproving comments about the fact it is a diesel motor. To end, this is one hell of a car. I am not often impressed and have to say this car has got me thinking about buying an Audi A4/Audi A6 3.0 TDI V6 for daily commuting. It really has got me thinking, and I still have conversations about these engines one month after tuning! Many thanks to Ashley Gloyn (Facebook) for bringing the vehicle to me - I had a great day working on this car, and have seriously got the eBay itch ;-) Nicholas Lawrence //ON CARS email - [email protected] |
